The Tubs
Welsh-London jangle-punk — Richard Thompson melodies at Buzzcocks speed, folk-club craft in a punk frame, the revival's sharpest writers.
The Tubs are a London-based group formed in 2018, with members whose roots lie in Cardiff and in the earlier band Joanna Gruesome. Their songs combine chiming, interlocking guitar lines drawn from jangle pop and British folk-rock with the tempo and terseness of late-1970s punk, and Owen Williams sings in a clipped, plaintive style over them.
Lyrically the material tends toward grief, anxiety and awkward self-examination, delivered plainly enough that the melodic brightness of the arrangements sits in open contrast to it. Songs have touched on OCD, heartbreak and self-loathing, sung without much distance from the subject.
The band records for Trouble in Mind and has drawn attention for the density of hooks packed into short songs. Their second album, Cotton Crown, released the previous year, pushed the guitar interplay further while keeping the songs compact.
On stage the songs take on a rawer edge, closer to the noise of Hüsker Dü than to the folk-rock reference points in the guitar writing, and the band plays with the same DIY energy it started with.
