A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, emerged from Harlem as a member of the A$AP Mob collective. His 2011 mixtape Live.Love.A$AP brought wide attention, pairing a New York rapper with production drawn from Houston's chopped-and-screwed tradition and the hazy, reverb-heavy sound then labelled cloud rap. Singles including "Peso" and "Purple Swag" established the template.
Subsequent albums Long.Live.A$AP, At.Long.Last.A$AP and Testing pushed further into psychedelic and experimental production while keeping his relaxed, elastic flow at the centre. He has worked extensively in fashion, both as a model and a designer, and that visual sensibility carries through his videos and stage presentation.
