Chron Gen formed in Hitchin, Hertfordshire in 1978, taking their name from a shortening of "chronic generation." They arrived alongside the wave of British punk bands that emerged at the turn of the 1980s, releasing early singles on small independent labels before signing to Secret Records, home to several of their contemporaries. Their material tended toward tuneful, fast punk with clear vocal melodies rather than the shouted delivery common to the era, and their debut album Chronic Generation appeared in 1982. The band has reformed and toured periodically since.
