One Way System
Blackpool's own UK82 veterans, closing a room in their home town — spiked-hair anthems played where they started.
One Way System formed in Blackpool, England, in 1979, as part of the UK82 wave of street punk that followed the first generation of British punk. The original lineup was Craig Halliday on guitar, Gavin Whyte on vocals, Bob Grant on drums and Gaz Buckley on bass, soon joined by second guitarist David Ross. Early releases included the self-financed single "Stab the Judge" and the 1981 EP No Entry, put out on Blackpool's own Lightbeat/Beat the System label.
Their music is fast and chant-driven, with shouted gang vocals, simple riffs and lyrics concerned with unemployment, authority and everyday frustration, delivered with the blunt urgency common to the wider UK82 scene rather than any studio polish.
The band recorded for Anagram Records during the early 1980s, becoming the label's first signing after the single "Give Us a Future" reached the independent charts and the band appeared on the cover of the music paper Sounds. Between 1982 and 1984 they placed five singles in the UK Indie Chart and reached the albums top ten twice, including with All Systems Go.
A 1984 tour of the US West Coast alongside Circle Jerks was cut short after singer Keith Morris broke his neck, though the band salvaged one date supporting Suicidal Tendencies. One Way System split in early 1986 with songs written for an unreleased third album, and drummer Tom Couch went on to spend two years with the U.K. Subs.
The band reformed in 1995 with Gavin Whyte back on vocals, and have toured and re-formed periodically since, with several changes of singer and bass player along the way, including a tour of Japan in the mid-1990s. Cherry Red reissued a singles collection in 2003, keeping the early catalogue available to newer listeners.
