Notsensibles

1 festival played

Lancashire punk best known for a satirical anthem people keep taking at face value — 'I'm in Love with Margaret Thatcher', forever misread.

Notsensibles formed in Burnley, Lancashire, in the late 1970s, part of the wave of small-town punk bands that sprang up in the wake of the first London groups. Their material leaned heavily on humour and local absurdity, delivered at speed and with a broad northern accent that was itself part of the joke.

The band's best-remembered song was written as a piece of deadpan provocation rather than an endorsement, a distinction lost on a fair number of listeners over the years. Their records appeared on small independent labels, and the group has reunited periodically in the decades since, playing to audiences drawn from both the original punk generation and later converts.
