The two Stockholm architects of cloud rap on one stage — auto-tuned melancholy and dreamlike, half-legible writing that a whole generation of internet rap grew out of.
Yung Lean and Bladee are two Swedish rappers whose work helped define the sound that came to be called cloud rap. Yung Lean, born Jonatan Leandoer Håstad, broke out of Stockholm in 2013 with "Ginseng Strip 2002" alongside his Sad Boys collaborators Yung Gud and Yung Sherman, pairing heavily processed vocals with hazy, synthetic production. Bladee, born Benjamin Reichwald, is a central figure in Drain Gang with Ecco2k and Thaiboy Digital, and works closely with producer Whitearmor on music built from Auto-Tuned, elastic melodies and oblique, aphoristic lyrics.
The two have collaborated repeatedly over the years, including the joint album Crest, released in 2022 with production from Whitearmor. Their shared sensibility — melancholy, digital texture and vocals treated as another synthesiser — has been widely imitated by younger internet rap artists.
