Common, born Lonnie Rashid Lynn on Chicago's South Side, began recording in the early 1990s and has been a central figure in conscious and alternative hip-hop ever since. His breakthrough came with the jazz-inflected Resurrection and its single "I Used to Love H.E.R.," and he later worked closely with the Soulquarians circle on Like Water for Chocolate and Electric Circus. "The Light," produced by J Dilla, remains his most widely heard song. He has also built a substantial acting career, and won an Academy Award and a Grammy for "Glory," written with John Legend for the film Selma.
