Cartoonishly fast California punk covers and originals, played entirely for the joke and entirely well — five decades of controlled silliness.

The Dickies came together when guitarist Stan Lee, born Stan Sobol, formed a band around vocalist Leonard Graves Phillips on the suggestion of their mutual friend Steve Hufsteter, who thought fronting a group would draw the introverted Phillips out of his shell. Drummer Karlos Kaballero came up with the band's name, and the group made its live debut at the Whisky a Go Go in December 1977.

Lee had originally set out to become a guitar virtuoso before Hufsteter steered him toward the Ramones, and seeing the Damned's first American tour with bassist Billy Club pushed him fully into punk, alongside the influence of the Weirdos.

The band's approach has stayed largely unchanged since: very fast tempos, bright melodies, cartoon-adjacent humour and helium-pitched vocals, applied to original songs and to radically sped-up covers of pop, rock and television themes. The style has been labelled pop-punk or bubble-gum punk, and the band has been nicknamed the clown princes of punk.

The Dickies were the first California punk band to appear on network television, on C.P.O. Sharkey, and the first signed to a major label when they joined A&M, an unusual position for an American punk act of the period. They have remained in continuous existence for more than forty years since.
