Cartoonishly fast California punk covers and originals, played entirely for the joke and entirely well — five decades of controlled silliness.

The Dickies formed in 1977 in the San Fernando Valley, part of the first wave of Los Angeles punk, with vocalist Leonard Graves Phillips and guitarist Stan Lee at the centre of the group throughout. Their approach has stayed largely unchanged: very fast tempos, bright melodies, cartoon-adjacent humour, and helium-pitched vocals. Alongside original material they became known for radically sped-up covers of pop and rock standards and television themes. The band signed to A&M early on, unusual for an American punk act of the period, and has continued performing for decades since.
