Bob Baker Marionettes
Los Angeles's oldest puppet theater, hand-operating marionettes since 1963 — a genuine civic institution rather than a novelty act, and a beloved palate-cleanser between sets.
The Bob Baker Marionette Theater was founded in Los Angeles in 1963 by puppeteer Bob Baker, who had worked in film and television before opening a permanent home for his company. Performances use hand-operated marionettes worked by visible puppeteers, staged close to the audience rather than behind a proscenium, and set to recorded music.
The theater holds a large collection of puppets built over decades, and its shows retain much of the style and repertoire developed in its early years. It is recognized as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and continues to operate as a working puppet theater.
