Made 'French Kiss', one of house music's foundational and most notorious records — Chicago originator status that needs no further argument.

Lil' Louis was born Marvin Louis Burns in Chicago in 1962. He started DJing in the city's clubs in the late 1970s and early 1980s, part of the scene's first wave, and moved into production by the late 1980s, eventually landing three number-one entries on Billboard's dance chart.

"French Kiss," released in 1989, began as an instrumental before vocals by Shawn Christopher were layered onto later pressings. The track is remembered for its bassline and for a several-minute breakdown in which the tempo slows almost to a stop before building back up. The BBC banned it for its erotic sound, but it still reached number two in the UK, topped the Dutch chart, and crossed into the US pop chart.

The record has been referenced ever since. Daft Punk name-checked Lil Louis on "Teachers," Laurent Garnier used one of his remixes on "Flashback," and Josh Wink's "How's Your Evening So Far?" sampled it directly, later resampled by Lil' Kim. Basement Jaxx featured him on "One More Chance" in 2009, and John Legend sampled his track "Video Clash" for "Made to Love" in 2013.

He followed French Kiss with the album From the Mind of Lil Louis and, recording as Lil Louis & The World, the single "Club Lonely." In 2015 he suffered permanent hearing loss in one ear after an air horn was set off near him during a soundcheck. His sets stay rooted in deep, soulful Chicago house.

In 2026, Madonna sampled "French Kiss" heavily on her single "I Feel So Free," the first promotional track from her album Confessions II, produced with Stuart Price and Arca, and described afterward as a direct tribute to Louis's original record.
