Brassy, retro-cinematic indie pop — 'My Type' still swings, a horn section and a matinee-idol grin.
Saint Motel formed in Los Angeles in 2009, with singer A. J. Jackson and guitarist Aaron Sharp meeting while attending film school in Southern California. They later added bassist Dak Lerdamornpong, whom they met at a sushi restaurant near campus, and drummer Greg Erwin, who came from a nearby school.
That film-school background carried into the group's work from the start: the 2009 debut EP, ForPlay, included a video for each of its six songs. Their first full-length album, Voyeur, followed in 2012 and debuted at number eighteen on the alt specialty radio chart, drawing praise from outlets including The Washington Post and Daytrotter.
The EP My Type, released through Parlophone in 2014, climbed the top thirty in several European countries and went platinum in Italy. The band signed to Elektra Records that December and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform the title track alongside "Cold Cold Man."
Their second album, Saintmotelevision, followed in 2016 with a North American tour alongside Hippo Campus and JR JR. Its single "Move" appeared in the video game FIFA 17, and the band built a virtual reality segment for every track on the record, later adding an augmented reality version as well.
From 2019 the band released The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack in two EP installments, whose single "A Good Song Never Dies" turned up on the soundtrack to the video game MLB The Show 20.
