Joan Jett & The Blackhearts came together in 1980, after Jett's years as guitarist in the Runaways. With producer and collaborator Kenny Laguna she co-founded Blackheart Records, releasing her early work independently when labels passed on it. The band's cover of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" became a worldwide hit, and "Bad Reputation," "Crimson and Clover" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You" remain among their best-known songs.

The music stays close to a simple template — compact structures, heavily distorted rhythm guitar, and Jett's plainspoken vocals — drawing on 1970s glam, garage rock and punk. Jett and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
